GUARANTEED PRICE
HARD TIMES THE TEST
Among the ex-servicemen who came to Wellington for the reunion of-the 13th Battery of the New Zealand Artillery Division on Saturday evening was Mr. N. G. Luxton, of Matapu, South Taranaki.: Mr. Luxton said the visitors had had a most interesting time meeting old comrades and were, much struck with the extent and completeness of the Exhibition buildings, which they had the pleasure of inspecting.
Mr. Luxton's district is one W those in Taranaki which has shown less changes in ownership than most in the province during the boom years. Of the settlers many are sons of those who pioneered the land. Mr. Luxtori's interests are in dairying and he is naturally keenly observant of the con- « ditions created by the guaranteed price. He considers that hard times will provide a test of the system and realises that this season the large deficit will have to be found by the country. The guarantee had been, he added, a distinct help, especially to those who took up "land of 'recent years, while men who switched over from the cow to the sheep must be having a difficult time.
The land in Mr, Luxton's district is known as some of the best in Taranaki and in recent years there has been very great entei'prise in roading shown by the county council responsible. The roads there are among the best and show a remarkable revolution in surface and method of construction during the, last three decades.
Mr. 'Luxton takes a .close interest in golf in his leisure time, and is one of the foundation members of a club \ which bears a great historic name, Te Ngutu. The course is a short distance only from Te Ngutu-p-te-manu, the battleground in the sixties where fell the dashing leader Major yon Tempsky. His name is perpetuated by a district road and his memory by a ' cairn and public reserve. :
