RAIN NEEDED
OTAGO DISTRICT
UNSEASONABLE WEATHER
(By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.") DUNEDIN, This Day. A long dry spell is creating water problems in most parts of Otago. In Central Otago there has been practically no rain for weeks, and the total rainfall since the beginning of the year has been only a few inches.
Creeks and rivers are at a very low ebb< and most reserves of rain water are depleted. Pumping is general, and where there are no pumps carrying is being resorted to. Similar conditions prevail in South Otago. Farmers, with, land ploughed ready for the action of frost are wondering when the frost is going to set in. Nearly all the inland hills are free from snow. Occasional patches have been noticed when there have been brief changes to southwesterly weather, but there has not been one fall of any moment so far, and thaws have followed immediately such falls as have occurred.
If the present conditions continue the outlook for farming will be a bleak one* and there will be very little spring sowing.
