ATHENIAN CLUB
AMUSING ENTERTAINMENT
A ' cleverly-organised "Poster and Slogan Gala" was held by the Athenian Club recently, and the members ,with customary thoroughness and ingenuity, told the world in a most attractive way, what to buy and why. The arrangements Avere in the hands of the president, Mr. E. Loader, and Mrs. Loader, assisted by Mr. R. Y. Friend as controller. The occasion called for fancy dress and original decoration. Art and humour were well balanced in a very long programme of dancing with vocal and musical interludes. The hall was converted into a gigantic rectangular hoarding on which were displayed large advertising sets, alternating brilliant colour and bright humour. The stage was occupied by a [comic orchest, "Fine Old Salts," apI propriately arrayed. The programme included a tap-dancing sextet in costume directed by Miss Marjorie Newport; songs by Mrs. P. Loader (contralto), and novelty dances. "The Left is Right"—a mystery frolic based on ten well-known traffic slogans, was won, very appropriately, by "Safety First" (Mr. and Mrs. F. Dodson). A second, "Hidden Hoardings," in keeping with the poster theme, went to Mrs. D. Sinclair and Mr. R. Friend. Competition in poster dresses was exceptionally keen, and with six double classes to decide, the judges, Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Hooper, had a difficult task, finally selecting the following prize-winners:—Humor-ous,- Mr. H. Strangemure and Mrs. A. T. West; original, Mrs. R. Y. Friend and Mr. R. Friend; fancy, Mrs. S. Palmer and Mr. O. Ashton; New Zealand section, Mrs. W. G. Reddish and Mr. H. Duncan; British section, Mrs. C. M. Howard and Mr. A. E.. Page; and slogan, Miss A. Conners.
