Northamptonshire, who have been at the bottom of the county cricket championship ladder for the past five years, scored their first win in a championship match since May, 1935, when they defeated Leicestershire by an innings and 193 runs on their home ground. Brookes contributed 187 to Northamptonshire's total of 510 for eight, declared, and in Leicestershire's second innings W. E. Merritt, the former New Zealand slow bowler, took six for 56.

Results of the series of matches which was completed today are:—

Middlesex v. Sussex, at Lords.—Sussex 182 and 236. Middlesex 264 (Compton 81) and 155 for three.*. Middlesex won by seven wickets.

Essex v. Worcestershire, at Chelmsford. —Essex 271 (Nicholls not out 116; Jenkins seven for 98) and 285 for five, declared (O'Connor not out 118). Worcestershire 155 and 106 (R. Smith six for 46). Essex won by 295 runs.

Hampshire v. Kent, at Southampton. —Kent 134 (Heath five for 48) and 364 (Fagg 149). Hampshire 211 and 108 (Todd five for 40). Kent won by 179 runs.

Lancashire v. Yorkshire, at Manches-ter.-r-Lancashire 300 (Nutter 85) and 185 (Bowes six for 43). Yorkshire 528 for eight, declared (Sutcliffe 165, Mitchell 136). Yorkshire won by an innings and' 43 runs.

Northamptonshire v. Leicestershire, at Northampton.—Leicestershire 134 and 183 (Merritt six for 56). Northamptonshire 510 for eight, declared (Brookes 187). Northamptonshire won by an innings and 193 runs.

Nottinghamshire v. Surrey, at Nottingham.—Surrey 208 (Butler six for 82) and 301 (Barling 96). Nottinghamshire 247 and 264 for three (Hardstaff not out 114, Gunn not out 92). Nottinghamshire won by . seven wickets.

Warwickshire v. Derbyshire, at Birmingham.—Warwickshire 141 (Copson five for 47) and 372 (Dollery 177). Derbyshire 234 (Hollies six for 48) and 208 (Hollies five for 79). Warwickshire won by 71 runs.

Oxford University v. Free Foresters, at Oxford.-r-Oxford 283 (Eager 92) and 329 (Eager 134). Free Foresters 220 and 383 (Mitchell-Innes 143). Oxford won by 9 runs.
