25,000 CASUALTIES

(Received May 31, 10.10 a.m.)

CHUNGKING, May 30.

The Japanese were forced to retreat 200 miles on the Northern Hupeh front, where they suffered 25,000 casualties.

The military authorities estimate the Japanese casualties from the beginning of hostilities at 870,000, and states that the Japanese estimates of the Chinese casualties are grossly exaggerated.

The Imperial Japanese headquarters reported that 936,345 Chinese dead have been counted on the battlefields from the beginning of the hostilities to April 30, while 59,i>98 Japanese were killed. The actual number of Chinese killed, it was stated, was believed to be much larger. The total Chinese casualties were estimated at 2,300,000.
