SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS.

Although it has deepened since yesterday, the depression has marie only slight progress eastwards and still runs from the vicinity of Norfolk Island down the eastern Tasman Sea and across the South Island. Consequently, the southerly change which was expected has not yet eventuated, winds remaining northerly generally. Forces have been mainly modera'o east of the ranges, and strong elsewhere, with gales in. places. Rain has X been almost continuous throughout the twenty-four hours on the west const of the South Island and has been heavy in the Alps, West Coast rivers being flooded this morning. Light falls have occurred also in oilier western districts and in the north and" south. In eastern districts the weather has been cloudy but fine. Temperatures have risen further und aro now mild, except in the southern half of the South Island.
