ROAD CYCLING

HUGHES CUP TO DUTTON

A feature of the 15-mlles race held by the Poneke Amateur Cycling Club on Saturday was the splendid handicapping by Mr. K. Menzies, the scratch riders catching the leaders 200 yards from the finish.

B. Dutton has opened his winning account early He took first place and fastest time.

The limit start was 6min and the field was divided by half-minute Intervals until the scratch group, Dutton, -R. Crerer, and R ; Loader (now of Palmerston North), left the mark. This group just overhauled the halfminute men near the half-way point. After rounding the turn the one- and the one-and-a-half-minute groups were also quickly reached by the back division.

From this point it was' just a question of whether or not the leaders, G. Howard, S. Frew, and H. Sparkes, would be caught. With about, two miles to go, Howard forged away from the others and valiantly endeavoured to reach the line first, but without success. The order past the finish was: Dutton (scr), Kent (%min), F. Alexander (lmin). V. Evans (%mln), R. Loader (scr). A number of stragglers came in after the main groups, these having been caught short of racing condition. Results; — ' R. Dutton (scr), 37min • 30sec, 1; H. Kent (V>min), 38min 0 l-ssec, 2: F. Alexander (liiiin), 38min 31sec, 3. Fastest Times. —Dutton, 1; Kent, 2; Loader. 3. Next Saturday's event is to be a 20-mlles time trial with machines restricted to a. gear of 70 or under. PETONE CLUB. The Petone Club held a 10-mile road race from the Grand National Hotel, Petone, to the V.I.C. and back. The winner was F. Humphreys, with D. Austin, off the limit mark, second, and H. Laurie, three minutes, third. Fastest time went to P. Pollock, with C. McGurk second These two riders teamed well. C. Biggs made third fastest time. He rode a lone race till the last mile. CASH CLUB'S RACE. The Wellington Cash Cycling Club held a 20-mile race from Petone to Silverstream and back. H. Houston and G. Sinclair gave a Start of six minutes to the limit ■ men. An addition to the club's ranks is B. Glover, a New South Wales rider. He started the previous week, but had a spill, and was still showing the effect in Saturday's race. In a good finish J. Mosen beat J Martin, with 1. Coult'on third. R. Wakeman, off a back mark, when riding well, had an attack of cramp, and H. Houston waited for him, thereby losing a chance to win fastest time; he made second fastest time. Sinclair was unfortunate to have chain trouble early in the race.

The club will hold a low-gear trial race next Saturday. .
