SOUTHERLY WINDS

CHANGEABLE, IMPROVING

Special forecast for Wellington:— Light to freshening south-west-erly winds decreasing tonight and turning to the north-west tomorrow. A little light drizzle is possible at first, but the weather for the most part will be fair. Temperatures will be rather milder.

The forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today by the Meteorological Office, is for southwesterly winds prevailing, mainly moderate, but strong in some exposed positions, decreasing tonight and turning to north-westerlies in the south. The weather will be rather changeable and with scattered light rains at times but improving, and for the most part fair. Temperatures are likely to be cool to moderate.

The anti-cyclone which has been centred over the North Tasman Sea for some days has advanced further towards the Dominion, but has not yet brought good weather owing to the depression having deepened to the east of the South Island, thereby causing south-westerly winds to become fresh to strong overnight in numerous places. In districts with a westerly aspect the weather for the last twentyfour hours has been cool and changeable, and there have been passing showers in the Auckland peninsula, and in Westland, Otago, and Southland. East of the ranges yesterday the weather was fair and mild, although the north-westerly winds were strong in places, but this morning, with the change to south-westerly winds it has become changeable there also.

A moderate to freshening southwesterly wind has prevailed at Auckland, and the changeable, showery weather of the last two or three days has continued, 6 points of rain being recorded in the last twenty-four hours, temperatures being a little cooler than of late, the maximum be}ng 61.7 degrees, and the minimum 57.8 degrees.

In Wellington yesterday morning 3.8 hours of bright sunshine were recorded, but the weather became cloudy in the afternoon and the total for the day was 3.9 hours of sunshine. The weather however, was pleasant with a light northerly breeze, and mild temperatures, 63.8 degrees the maximum. About 10 p.m. yesterday the wind changed to a moderate southerly breeze, and the weather became cold and wet, a minimum temperature of 47.3 degrees being recorded. Four points of rain were recorded by 9 a.m., by which time it was becoming better.

Although cloudy in Christchurch yesterday the weather was warm, with a fresh north-westerly wind, the maximum temperature being 70.1 degrees. A southerly change occurred at about 6 p.m., and there were a few drops of rain, and temperatures became colder, the minimum being 48.1 degrees. This morning the weather was still dull and cool.

Dunedin had an overcast day yesterday with intermittent drizzling showers, amounting to 19 points of rain. Temperatures were mild in the morning, but cold later on, when a fresh south-westerly blew. The rain had stopped by this morning, but the weather was still cold and changeable.
