N.Z. HOCKEY TOURNEY

WELLINGTON SURPRISED

Surprise at a decision of the New Zealand Hockey Association giving permission to the Auckland Hockey Association to conduct a national hockey tournament in 1940 was expressed at a meeting of the management committee of the Wellington Hockey Association last night. The chairman, Mr. C. P. McKenzie, said he thought that if Auckland held the Centennial tournament it would be very unlikely to receive any entries from other provinces.

Mr. M. Browne said there was fault on the part of the New Zealand Association in letting the Wellington Association assume that it had obtained permission to conduct the tournament.

It was decided to seek elucidation from the New Zealand Association on the point whether the Wellington Association could feasibly conduct the New Zealand tournament, considering that Auckland had been granted permission to hold it.

A proposal that a fund, to be known as the representative teams' travelling expenses fund, should be established by means of a levy of eleven shillings per team from and including third grade to senior grade in every club was approved.

Messrs. C. Harvey and A. A. Kirk were appointed joint selectors for the senior second division and senior reserve grade representative teams, and Messrs. J. Mulheron and F. L. Newcombe were appointed junior selectors.

An invitation from the Canterbury Association asking the association to send three representative teams to Christchurch on June 5 to play Canterbury was accepted, subject to the teams being available. The representative teams to be sent will be senior first division, senior second division, and junior second division. Nomination^, from clubs for these teams will close next Jhursday.

An invitation from the Manawatu Association to send a team to contest the Cliffe Shield on June 14 was accepted. Nominations for this team will close on May 25. Permission was granted the University Club to play a club game set down for May 27 on June 5, provided that suitable arrangements are made between the two clubs concerned.

It was decided that if the University Club entered a proposed new team in the fourth grade, a team would be transferred from intermediate to fifth grade.
