WAIKATO TROTS

WELL-BALANCED CARD

(By "Ariki Toa.")

The Waikato Trotting Club's Winter [Meeting al Claudelands tomorrow has attracted particularly strong fields throughout the eight-levent programme, and with latest indications of fine weather in the north a most successful carnival should result. The class engaged in the open contests represent the best available talent in the North Island, and each evetft should be productive of plenty of thrills. The Burch Handicap has attracted ten well-performed pacers, but. taking everything into consideration it is difficult to go past Parauri. He is one of the most promising pacers in the north, and an illustration of his splendid ability was furnished when he won in easy fashion at Addington last month. On that occasion he broke his overcheck at the start, usually a big disadvantage, and. struck interference in the running, but this did not stop him from corning right away "in the straight and winning decisively. He has previously shown to advantage over two miles, and there is every reason to anticipate his Starting a short-priced favourite. Shrewdie and Three Bells will be coupled, and of the pair the latter appeals the more. He won in convincing style over a mile and a half at Auckland last month, when the going was particularly heavy, and although he has yet to prove himself over two miles there., is no reason why the distance should be beyond him. Policy is M. Stewart's representative in- the race, and this fact alone will assure her of support. However, it is worth remembering that she has won once and been placed three times over this journey. Of the remainder the best prospects may be held by Effie Parrish and Loyal Direct, both winners during the Easter holidays. Betting will be on the win-and-place system and the following may command attention:— Introductory Handicap. — Ihi Ihi, Great Guy. Sir Tony. Eureka Handicap.—-Double Peter, Grand Dame, Tsana. Tamahere Handicap. — Axminster, Amywin. Hottentot. Burch Handicap.—Parauri, Three Bells—Shrewdie bracket, Policy. Rukuhia Handicap.—Roma Girl, Bold Venture. Marcus.
