LOCAL INDUSTRY

MORE EXPANSION

ENCOURAGING REPORTS

Encouraging reports of the expansion in industrial activity continue to be received by the Government from many parts of the Dominion, according to a statement issued by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) today.

"A New Zealand subsidiary of an Australian carpet manufacturing company is proceeding with proposals for the manufacture of under felts and wool felt carpets," said Mr. Sullivan. "A large proportion of the felt will be manufactured from New Zealand wool and carpets will be made of 100 per cent. New Zealand wool. It is expected that the services of over a hundred employees will be required for this work.

"Production has also been started in an Auckland factory of heavy steel' wheelbarrows. This is a new line as far as this particular company is concerned, and all the special machinery for the production of these goods has been made locally.

"From Christchurch reports had been received of a footwear factory developing a new line of shoes of a special style. Extensions are also being made by a firm of furriers which has taken over an additional floor and engaged a substantial number of workers. This extension has been brought about as a direct consequence of increased orders received since the limitation on imports of furs was imposed. A firm of platers is seriously considering the expenditure of a large sum of money on development. An engineering concern has developed the manufacture of bakers' machine equipment which, it was stated, had not previously been attempted in New Zealand. Manufacturers of blouses and fancy neckwear have extended into additional premises, are installing 18 more machines, and will engage a substantial number of new workers as they become available. A company manufacturing cotton frocks and overalls has increased its staff by over a third since the beginning of the year. Demand still- outstrips production and further hands are taken on as soon as any are offering.'
