Recently Mr. J. A. Gilmour, S.M.. who is frequently required to interpret clauses in industrial awards, was asked to state the dividing line between two sections of the scale of truck weights which govern motor drivers' wages. The award provided that drivers of trucks having a combined weight of vehicle and load of 2 tons to 4_ tons should be paid £4 18s 6d a week, and that drivers of trucks of 4§ tons to 6| tons should be paid £5 2s. The Drivers' Union argued that the driver of a 4_-ton truck should be paid the higher wage, but the Magistrate ruled that a truck and load not exceeding 4_ tons came within the classification, 2 tons to 4_: tons.
