COMMITTEE APPOINTED
EFFECT OF BOMB BLASTS

To supervise and co-ordinate the- research work 'in connection with airraid precautions the Government has appointed the following as a .Civil Defence Research Committee:—Dr. E. V. Appleton. Jacksohian Professor of Natural philosophy at Cambridge, University; Div J. F. Baker, Professor of Civil Engineering at Bristol .University; Professor J. D. Bernal, University Professor of Physics, Birkbeck College; Dr. C. G. Darwin, Master of Christ's College, Cambridge; Dr. A. iT. S. Piffard, Professor of Civil Engineering, London University; Professor R. V. Southwell, Professor of Engineering Science, Oxford University; Major G. I. Taylor, Yarrow Research Professor of the Royal Society; and. Dr. W. N. Thomas,' Professor of Engineering at the University College of ; South Wales and Monmouthshire, Cardiff.
The committee will investigate gas, camouflage, shelter, resistance.; etc. The "Daily Telegraph" understands that the A.R.P, Department's recent tests in this connection have been'high-' ly reassuring, and says that the effect of blasts from bombs, which was much discussed during -Jthe Spanish war, has been greatly exaggerated. The; newspaper gives an instance of a test'in which goats tethered outside a shelter were not affected by a 5001b bomb exploding at a distance of 50ft.
