MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., presided at today's sitting of the Magistrate's Court.
A sentence of 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour was imposed upon Eric Arthur Alden, a labourer, aged 23, who pleaded guilty to the theft of a blanket. Detective-Sergeant W. McLennan. who prosecuted, described how Alden had been staying with his wife at a hotel, had taken a blanket off the bed. put it in a trun.:. and sent it by rail to Napier. He was looked upon as a very active thief.
John Valentine Spencer, a steward, aged 26, who admitted the theft of a radio set. "valued at £13 10s, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon any time within six months.
Stephen Michael Richardson, a steward, aged 20. charged with deserting from the s.s. Tairoa on April 21, was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour.
A fine of £1. in default seven days' imprisonment, was imposed upon Eugene Patrick Cooney. a labourer, aged 46, who was charged with a fifth statutory offence of drunkenness.
