TIME OF UNCERTAINTY

DOMINION AFFECTED

LORD GALWAY'S REMARKS

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, This Day.

"We are going through a time of great uncertainty and unrest, and it affects you all to a great extent," said the Governor-General (Lord Galway) when' officially opening the twentysixth annual conference of the United Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association •of New Zealand. Delegates were present from the four affiliated associaticeis. v

The Governor-Oekieral said that the present basis of ordinary commercial relations was uncertain owing to affairs in Europe, and New Zealand could not be comjpletely isolated. He remarked on the conclusion of the war in Spain, and said; that for the rest of Europe "We can, only hope that common sense will prevail and that we will emerge from; the dark clouds of the present to a condition of flourishing trade."

Lord Galway congratulated the association on its long ; record in the development of business good will and philanthropy, and expressed a wish that it flourish as it: deserved.

His Excellency wais thanked for accepting, the invitation to open the conference.

The annual repoi^fc stated that the total membership of 3976 is 171 higher than last year. '

In his presidential address, Mr. C. W. J. Taylor, Auckland, said that the association had certainly widened the avenues Of eligibility, but insisted that any applicant must represent a wholesale house. The accident and sickness insurance resulted in a surplus of £436, the total policies to date being 1166 as compared with 1141 last year, though only 38.15 per cent, of the members were policy-holders, probably because they were unaware of the advantages offered.
