STRUGGLING FARMER
MR. LYONS TOUCHED BY
APPEAL*
MELBOURNE, April 20,
It is revealed that just before the death of Mr. J. A. Lyons a struggling dairy farmer at Leongatha, Victoria, wrote seeking Mr. Lyons's influence with the Closer Settlement Board to obtain an advance to buy more cattle. The man's appeal so touched Mr. Lyons that, after ascertaining that further State assistance was unobtainable, he personally guaranteed the man's overdraft. The sum involved was £60.
The guarantee lapsed by Mr. Lyons's death, but the publicity given to the story led a woman to offer to take over the guarantee. She is now making arrangements with the man's bankers.
