TRAVEL CLUB RECEPTION
The wet weather had an adverse effect upon the Travel Club reception yesterday afternoon; the Travel Club p rties are usually crowded, but yesterday there were many vacant seats at the tea tables in the Majestic Cabaret Lounge, where the reception was held.
There were two special guests of honour, Dr. Tyler Dennett, a Carnegie Corporation visitor from New York, and Mr. G. N. T. Goldie, of Wellington, who was a Carnegie Scholarship visitor recently to America. Other visitors included Mrs. Lagerquist (San Francisco), Miss Simpson (Canterbury Travel Club), Mrs. H. W. Collins (Auckland Travel Club), Mr. McQueen, Mrs. McGuire (Nelson). Mrs. Soloman Katz, and Miss Watson (Palmerston North). They were all welcomed by the chairman, Mri R. R. •Scott.
The hostesses were Mrs. W. O. Urquhart, Mrs. A. G. Bo water, Mrs. J. I. Goldsmith, and Mrs. C. Loneragan; and members of the executive present included Mrs. H. B. Oakes, Mrs. H. D. Bennett, and Miss N. E. Donovan (secretary).
Speeches were given by Mr. Goldie and Dr. Dennett, and Mrs. P. Hendra, accompanied by Mr. Thomas Wood, entertained with songs.
appearance of a grey old house is transformed to graciousness if its wide sills are used to support ■window boxes. The boxes are easily made, either by the home carpenter or by a local joiner, and any hardy plants will grow in them. Spring bulbs, wallflowers, Virginia stock", geraniums, and nasturtiums all look charming, and are easy to grow. ■ The colour scheme of the house's paintwork and of the curtains should guide your choice of flowers. The boxes, of- course, should be painted the same colour as the paintwork.
