BRAWL IN BAR

An argument as to the respective merits of different ships resulted in the appearance of John Burns, a seaman, aged 24, in the Magistrate's Court today, charged with assaulting Henry •Meech. He pleaded guilty, and was convicted and fined £1 by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M.

Sub-Inspector D. J. O'Neill, prosecuting, said that the accused and other seamen were assembled in a bar in the city. An argument arose as to the merits and demerits of certain ships, and the accused struck another sailor named Meech. A melee followed, and during the affair Meech was hit with a handle of beer, and had to have ten stitches inserted in his head. Inquiries showed, that the accused was not the man who used the handle of beer. He just started the thing, said the sub-inspector.

Burns stated that he was'under the influence of liquor at the time.
