GERMAN DESERTERS
TWO TO GO BACK
SPECIAL PLEA FOR OTHERS

NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day.
Four young Germans appeared at the New Plymouth Court this morning charged with desertion and with being prohibited immigrants.
Joseph Stein, 18, and Karl Friedrich Drews, 19, "who deserted from the Dortmund at Auckland on April 11 and were arrested at New Plymouth on April 14, were each sentenced to two months' imprisonment, and were ordered to be placed on board the Dortmund when she returns from Wellington on May 8 to load for Germany. A remand was granted in the case of Hans Kobald and Karl Schroeder, who pleaded guilty to deserting from the Kommodore Johnson at Auckland. It was stated that if they returned to Germany they would be regarded as military deserters and have to face a serious penalty. The Rev. F. L. Frost, M.P., was interesting himself in their case and the matter was being taken up by the Minister of Marine.
