AUTUMN BLOOMS

HUTT VALLEY SHOW

RESULTS OF THE JUDGING

It would be quite unsporting for us to object to the weather today, said the president of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society, Mr. J. S. Barton, at the opening of the autumn show in Lower Hutt yesterday, the attendance at which was marred by the weather.

Mr. Barton apologised for the absence of Lady Batterbee, who was to have opened the show but was absent tl-rough indisposition. In introducing Lady.. Wilford he welcomed an old friend whose name was perhaps better known than any other in the valley. The president thanked the committee . responsible for organising the show. Lady Wilford, who was received with acclamation, spoke of. her pleasure in returning to Lower Hutt, and especially to open a flower show. With the changing times flowers also had changed, and old varieties, favourites in Lower Hutt years ago, were now unknown. Lady Wilford complimented the. children on their exhibits, a lot of which were most artistic and some of which would have done credit to professional florists. Speaking of her recent attendance at the London Horticultural Hall, .she. specially mentioned the Russell lupins, which she hoped to show next year in Lower Hutt. (Applause.) SPECIAL AWARDS.
