The brigade consists of a superintendent, deputy superintendent, nine firemen, and- two messengers. Fifty calls were attended during the year. The majority of these were to grass or scrub fires, but in many cases houses were threatened, and only the good work of the firemen prevented greater damage.

The new electric siren, purchased from brigade funds, is in operation, and is: a great improvement over the old alarm bell. The brigade is awaiting the completion of several necessary additions to station ' and plant, promised by the Upper Hutt Borough Council. A more up-to-date motor unit is in commission, and has already proved its usefulness. It lacks, however, a pump, which is necessary to deal adequately with fire-fighting con-, ditions in the Silverstream area. '

At the annual meeting the executive committee was directed to go into the matter of securing some form of pumping apparatus. Reference was made to the financial help rendered the brigade by local residents.

The election of officers resulted as follows:—Superintendent, W. Mason (re-elected); Deputy Superintendent, T. A. Harlen (re-elected), working, foreman, H.- Smith; secretary, R. Smith; treasurer, H. Clutterbuck; hon. auditor, T. Goodlahd. '
