SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS,

An extensive depression has been slowly crossing the Dominion, while barometers have risen considerably in the south. In the central portion of the country, where the drought has been most severe, excellent rains have occurred. - In Marlborough and Nelson the falls have been mostly less than half an inch, but in Taranaki and Well, lgrton totals of one lo three inches are common. All the remainder of the Dominion has had light falls, and it is still raining almost everywhere except in Westland, Southland, and North Auckland. Since yesterday morning a change to strong southerly winds with cold temperatures has advanced from the south to beyond New Plymouth and Napier, the wind force having since decreased, however, over the South Island.
