HERD IMPROVEMENT

SCHEME APPROVED

A dairy herd improvement plan submitted by the New Zealand Dairy Board was approved by the board's conference yesterday afternoon.

The cost of the scheme is to be met by Is per cow from the industry and Is per cow from the Government, and as far as the industry is concerned there is to be an increase in the board's levy of l-100th of a penny per pound of butter and l-200th of a penny per pound of cheese. This is estimated to return on the year's estimate approximately £18,000. It was stated that if the average life of the dairy cows could be extended by one year the farming community could be saved an annual replacement cost of £500,000, and if the nation's production per cow could be raised 101b the industry's return could be increased on today's prices by £1,200,000.

During the course of a discussion delegates emphasised that approval of the plan was contingent on the Government subsidy, which should not be paid out of the Dairy Industry Accouat, but out of the Consolidated Fund.
