The Minister of Public Works v, Hon. R. Semple) left this morning to inspect Public Works activities in the Wellington, Taranaki, and North Island central districts. After visiting New Plymouth, Kawhia, and Taumarunui, he expects to return to Wellington on Wednesday.
Mr. W. G. Holloway, at present Town Clerk of Taihape, has been appointed to a similar position at Dannevirke. He will succeed Mr. G. T. O'Hara Smith, who has been appointed Town Clerk at Masterton.
The great services rendered by the late Colonel G. Mitchell to the Wellington District Free Ambulance were referred to at the monthly meeting of" the board today by the chairman (Sir Charles Norwood), when expressing deep regret at Colonel Mitchell'* death. Sir Charles said that Colonel Mitchell had been a member of the board since its inception and his valuable influence and sterling qualities would be badly missed. The board had lost a valued member and the community, too, had lost an earnest worker in the common good. A motion of sympathy with Colonel Mitchell's relatives was carried in silence,, and a copy of a suitable resolution is to be forwarded to them.
Dr. A. M. Begg, Director of Research, New Zealand branch British Empire Cancer Campaign^ is ■■ working in the laboratories of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London. He is engaged under the direction of Dr. Gye, F.R.S., in an investigation' into the cause of cancer. This investigation opens up a new prospect of discovery and is considered so promising that Dr. Gye has asked that Dr. Begg'a period of research work in London be extended for a few months.
Mr. P.' W. Maddock, general manages, for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (N.Z^,, Ltd., left today for a business trip of the South Island. ~
