GUARANTEED PRICE
ADVISORY COMMITTEE'S
STANDARDS
A number of remits dealing with the guaranteed price for dairy produce are on the agenda paper for the consideration of the Dominion Dairy Conference, which opened in Wellington today. In addressing the conference, the chairman, Mr. W. E. Hale, referred to the attitude adopted by the ward conferences of the industry throughout New Zealand.
At the ward conferences, said Mr. Hale, there was complete unanimity of opinion on the action taken by the Dairy Board in arranging the conference of the board, the National Dairy Federation, the South Island Dairy Association, and the New Zealand Farmers' Union to deal with the question of the guaranteed price. There was also clear evidence that :he industry was solidly behind the decision of that conference, which urged *he necessity of securing for the 1939-40 season recognition of the standards *et and the recommendation made by the 1938 price-fixing advisory committee, and a guaranteed price fixed on those standards plus ascertainable increased costs. The opinion of the industry was undoubted in this connection. A final decision must be made by the conference and representations made to the Government.
Conditions in the industry, said Mr. Hale, were becoming increasingly difficult, and costs were steadily rising. They believed that the principles of the guaranteed price, as outlined in the Primary Products Marketing - *.c----count, could only be made operative by giving effect to the recommendation of the advisory committee.
