BOXING AND WRESTLING

SOME CLOSE BOUTS

A bright programme of wrestling and boxing pleased spectators at Petone last evening, when the Hutt Valley Boxing Association and the Petone Wrestling Club combined in an effort to raise funds for the sports entry in the Hutt Valley Queen Carnival. There was a good attendance, and all bouts were closely contested. The Sports Queen, Miss Muriel Howe, was present. Mr. R. Green was referee of the wrestling bouts. Mr. E". J. Seager, who acted as master of ceremonies, issued a challenge to Petone on behalf of the Wanganui Club. The tournament is to take place in June. He also announced a tournament, which is being held this week, in aid of the Woollen Mills Queen. Each of the five bouts fought' last night were of three three-minute rounds. WRESTLING. I. Lang (Petone), 4st 131b, beat Terry Childs (Kilbirnie), 4st 71b, by two falls. The falls were obtained in the first and third rounds by means of body presses. R. McColl (Kilbirnie), 9st 41b, drew with A. Craig (Petone), 9st 41b, one fall each. Craig obtained the first fall in the second round by means of a cradle hold. The equalising fall came late in the third round by way of a similar hold. W. Weston (Kilbirnie), 9st, drew with'H^. Wales (Petone), 9st, in a bout in which there were no falls. C. Croskery (Kilbirnie), lOst, drew with J. Hill (Petone), lOst, in a bout in which there were no falls. This bout was a very willing one, and did not follow the Olympic rules. It j opened with a "spot" of drop-kicking, j and looked as if it was going to end several times prematurely, when both I went out of the ring. W. Peterson (Kilbirnie), 6st 121b, drew with J. Phillips (Kilbirnie), 6st 81b, there being one fall each. BOXING. The boxing consisted of five nodecision bouts refereed by Mr. Stewart. Mayne Morton (Railway) fought two rounds of an exhibition match with Tommy Dunn (Railway) and two rounds with J. Loftus (Newtown). Billy Aitken (Netown) fought two rounds with Harold Foote (Newtown) and two rounds with his younger brother J. Aitken.

The three other bouts were as follows:—P. Oliver (Railway), 6st, v D. Lena (Newtown); T. McKillop (Railway), 4st lib, v. D. Philp (Railway), 3st 121b; D. Fairbrother (Railway), sst 61b, v. L. Oliver (Railway), 4st 101b.
