FINANCES FOR YEAR

Legal proceedings are to be taken by the Makara County Council against' its ratepayers whose rates are unpaid by the end of May, according to a! decision made yesterday by the council j after the County Clerk (Mr. H. Pickford) had presented a report on the' financial affairs of the county for the year 1938-39. , The year began with a credit balance of £2643 13s "d and closed with a credit balance of £2127 8s Id, said the report. The total receipts were £19,836 7s 6d and the total expenditure £20,352 13s. The shrinkage of £516 5s 6d was' due partly to expenditure not budgeted i for and partly to items in the estimates overspent. j The total rates struck for the year amounted to £9199 12s 6d and there was collected £7734 Is 7d, leaving £1465 10s lid uncollected at the end of the year. The rate collection represented 84 per cent, of the rates struck, without recourse to the giving of discounts or the imposition of the 10 per cent, penalty. Arrears of rates amounting to £1505 Is 7d were also collected.

A total of 107 building permits was issued to the value of £47,302. Sixtythree permits were for new residences representing a value of £43,387, thirteen permits for alterations and additions to residences, the value being £2331, twenty-one permits for garages valued at £863, two for shops valued at £400, and eight for sheds, etc., valued at £321.
