DAWN PARADE

ON ANZAC DAY

VETERANS TO PAY TRIBUTE

On Anzac Day, Tuesday, April 25, the Australian Imperial Forces' Association, in conjunction with the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Returned; Soldiers' Association, have arranged to carry out a dawn parade.for the purpose of paying tribute to their comrades who made the supreme sacrifice. The parade, which will be commanded by Lieut-Colonel R. B. Ashe, M.C., of the A.I.F. Association, will muster near the railway station at 5 a.m. and march in silence to the war memorial at 5.30 a.m. A field gun supplied by the courtesy of Major-General J. E. Duigan, C.8., D.5.0., Chief of Staff, fired from Parliament Grounds, followed by the roll of drums, will signify the start of the service.

The Rev. Arthur Muriel, M.C., who was a combatant officer with the 46th Battalion, A.1.F., and is a member of the association, will conduct the service, at which Professor James Shelley (Director of Broadcasting), who is also a returned soldier, will pronounce the Anzac dedication, and Mr. T. Jordan, Mayor of Masterton, will deliver a short address. The Port Nicholson Band will be in attendance to play the hymns and the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Choir, conducted by Mr. F. Oakes, will sing "There is no Death." The New Zealand Government will be represented by the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones), and the Commonwealth Government will also be represented. There is every indication that the parade to commemorate such a solemn occasion will be a success as large numbers of ex-servicemen have already intimated their intention of being present. Arrangements for adequate transport are in hand and it is anticipated that the general public to whom Anzac has a real meaning will also make a point of being present. Last year in Sydney, 50,000 were present ,to witness this inspiring parade and those who are responsible for the arrangements are confident that the | citizens of Wellington will be present lin large numbers at the simple ceremony of remembering and honouring those who left these shores and paid the supreme sacrifice.
