N.Z. SCOTTISH

WELLINGTON COMPANY

YOUNG MEN APPROVED

Eighty-two young men who have offered for service in the Wellington company of the New Zealand Scottish Regiment have been approved as filling the requirements of Scottish birth by the provisional committee of the New Zealand Scottish Regimental Association (Wellington branch). Over one hundred and twenty young men were interviewed, but some of these had to be rejected because of lack of Scottish qualification, insufficient height or age. It is hoped, however, that some of the latter may yet be enrolled when the question of height has been discussed with Army headquarters, the association reports. There is no doubt about the? keenness and enthusiasm of those presenting themselves for examination, and it is certain the company's requirements will be met before tha middle of this month.

Donations are steadily coming in, but as it is necessary that the contribution by the association be paid into the Public Account before the recruits can be sworn in, a special drive is being made among the Scottsh community to raise the necessary funds to clothe and equip the company. To this end it has been decided to hold a general meeting in the Concert Chamber, Town Hall, on Thursday, April 27. It is proposed to enlist the assistance of a pipe band or bands and to hold a Scottish concert comprising Scottish songs, Highland dancing, etc., during the first part of the evening and'afterwards to proceed to the election of officers and the passing of the constitution and rules by the financial members of the association. An opportunity will be given those attending the concert to join the association and take part in the meeting. . Delegates from the Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin Associations will be received by the Wellington delegates at Wellington on April 19, when they will wait on the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones), who has kindly consented to receive the delegation in reference to the importation of the kilt and sundry other matters pertaining to the regiment. While the other centres' delegates are in Wellington the local committee hopes to form a regimental association with uniform constitution and rules.
