WIN FOR OTAGO

UNIVERSITY TOURNEY

VICTORIA COLLEGE SECOND

• (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, April 11. The New Zealand Universities' tournament was brought to a close today with the completion of the lawn tennis and the shooting match. Though both these shields went to Victoria by narrow margins, Otago maintained a com-1 fortable lead for the tournament shield, | and finished with 35% points to Vic-i toria's 23 points. Tournament gather; ings concluded with a ball in the Town Hall tonight, and the northern teams will return home by the first express] tomorrow morning.

Lawn tennis finals, played, at the university courts, produced many interesting matches, with the fate of the shield in doubt right up to the last match. Some of the interest was robbed from the competition by the defaulting of the mixed doubles final by W. J. Smith and Miss M_ Kerr (Otajr«), and the men's singles final by Smith, who was suffering from an injured ankle. The shooting shield went to Victoria College by a margin of only one point. A feature of the competition was the performance of F. B. Boaden (Auckland College) in breaking the record for the highest score with 130 points. Otago University gained a notable victory in the contest for the Drinking Horn, the event attracting a lot of attention in the city.

Following are the final points for the tournament shield: —Otago University, 353 points; Victoria College, 23 points; Auckland College, 9 points;, Canterbury College, 8£ points. LAWN TENNIS. . Victoria College retained the lawn tennis shield. Because of Miss M. Kerr having to play in the final of the Otago lawn tennis championships at Logan Park, she had to default her match in the final of the mixed doubles, which practically gave the shield to Victoria. A fairly high standard of play was witnessed during the day, one or two players, in both men's and women's sections being outstanding. It was unfortunate that W. J. Smith's ankle prevented him from playing in the men's singles final, as this game would have been productive of brilliant tennis. As it was, spectators were given an opportunity to see him in action in the mixed doubles, in which he was partnered with Miss* M. Kerr. Miss Kerr had previously scored a brilliant win against Miss F. E. McLean (Victoria). 6-4, 6-0, and with Smith she gave a sterling display in the semi-final. In the final

of the event they were to meet a strong pair in 1.. A. Morrison and Miss McLean • (Victoria), and a good game would have resulted.

The final of tne men's doubles was another interesting match in which F. H. Renouf and Morrison (Victoria) showed slight superiority ' over the Otago pair, C. H. Baird and T. C. Childs. The northerners took the first set after an interesting struggle, 7-5, but they made numerous mistakes in the second, and the Otago pair's steadiness gave them the set, 6-2. Renouf and Morrison made a great return to form in the final set, and smashed and volleyed their way to success, taking the set 6-1. The women's doubles did not produce tennis quite up to the standard of some of the other events, the title going to Misses M. Murray and M. Sexton (Canterbury). Results were:— Men's Singles.—C. H. Baird (Otago) beat W. J. Smith (Otago), by default. Men's Doubles. —F. H. Renouf ..and N. A. Morrison (Victoria) beat C. H. Baird and T. C. Childs (Otago), 7-5,2-6, 6-1. , ■ ' Women's Singles. Final.—Miss M. Kerr (Otago) beat Miss F. E. McLean (Victoria), 6-4, 6-0. | Women's Doubles, Semi-final. — Misses P. H. Higgin and M. A. Walker (Victoria) beat Misses L. Jones and S. Roscoe (Auckland), 6-4, 4-6. 6-3. Final: Misses M. Murray and M. Sexton (Canterbury) beat Misses Higgin and Walker. 7-9, 6-4, 8-6. Mixed Doubles.—Semi-final: W. J. Smith and Miss M. Kerr (Otago) beat J. Hartley and Miss M.. L. Fletcher (Victoria), 6-3, 6-3. Final: N. A. Morrison and. Miss M. Murray (Victoria) beat Smith and Miss Kerr by default. SHOOTING. * ' Misty, conditions prevailed in the morning for the start of the shooting contest at the Pelichet Bay range for the Haslam Shield. The sun broke through later, however, and by the time the marksmen had moved back to the 600 yards mound there was a clearing of the mist.

Victoria College retained the shield by scoring 635 points, Otago "filling second place with 634 points. Auckland and Canterbury were separated by a point for third position. F. B. Boaden (Auckland) broke the record for the highest score with a total of 130 points, the previous best being 129 points. Results:—
