RUGBY LEAGUE

SYDNEY TEAM WINS

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, April 9. Weakened in the second spell by the loss of an outstanding forward, Marist were no match for the fast, heavy Eastern Suburbs side from Sydney in yesterday's Rugby League game. The Auckland men held their owp. territorially in the first half, but wilted before the heavy Sydney rushes in the second.

Poor passing, cross-field running, and high tackling by both sides spoiled the first few minutes of the game which did not brighten until Mitchell, the giant Sydney centre, raced through and fended off Halsey, who attempted a tackle chest high, and ran across on the terrace side. Thompson converted. Play continued raggedly with the exchanges fairly even. Nearly half an hour passed before Marist scored, Erlckson slipping cleverly through a gap from fifteen yards out. The kick missed, but Anderson, the Marist kicker, was given another chance five minutes later when Donovan sidestepped'through near the line. Marist 6, Eastern Suburbs 5. With twelve minutes to go, Arnold ripped another hole in the Marist defence, dribbled across, and scored under the posts. Thompson converted. Marist looked dog-tired but Anderson summoned enough energy to beat a Sydney man in a race for the ball. The kick missed. The final score was: Eastern Suburbs 22, Marist 9.
