NORTH-WESTERLY WINDS

Special forecast for Wellington:— Strong north-westerly winds. Weather fair to cloudy, and temperatures becoming rather cooler. The general forecast for. the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon to-, day for the ensuing twenty-four hours,, is for westerly to north-westerly winds at first to the north of Nelson and Marlborough, bu. a temporary change to south-westerlies will be advancing from the south. Although strong in some exposed positions, winds will be mainly moderate in force. The weather for the most part will be fair to cloudy, with some scattered but mainly light rain in western and far southern districts. Temperatures will become rather cooler. Since yesterday a rather shallow, westerly depression has been crossing the South Island, and winds have become predominantly westerly or northwesterly. Although elsewhere moderate in force, they have been strong about Cook Strait and in the far south. This morning there was a change to southwesterlies again over the southern half of the South Island. There has /been an increasing amount of cloud in western and southern districts, and in South Westland, and in the far south there has been some scattered but mainly light rain. Temperatures have risen considerably compared with what they were on Wednesday. Auckland's weather yesterday was cloudy and cool. A light south-easterly breeze prevailed in the morning, but since then the wind has veered to the south-west or west. The maximum., and minimum temperatures were 68.5| and 56.7 degrees respectively. Early this morning some rain fell in the, vicinity of the city. Wellington's weather, although cloudy at tirries, was fine and mild, 7.1. hours of bright, sunshine being recorded, with maximum and minimum temperatures of 62.8 and 54.8 degrees. A northerly breeze prevailed yesterday, "and has gradually freshened. The wind this morning was occasionally blowing with gale force, the maximum velocity of gusts recorded at Kelburn being 58 miles an hour. Christchurch had clear, mi_d, and brilliantly sunny weather yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures being 62,5 and 47.7 degrees. A north-easterly breeze freshened during the afternoon, and at 9 a.m. today the wind was just changing to the southwest. In Dunedin also the weather was fine, mild, and bright, but during the afternoon it became cloudy -and some showers, totalling six points of rain, fell last night. A moderate northwesterly breeze changed this morning to the south-west. ; WEEKEND PROSPECTS. The meteorological situation'is now of the westerly type,, and prospects of anything ■ like adequarte rain to relieve the serious situation which has developed in many parts of the country owing to the absence of rain are at present remote.
