EGG PRODUCTION

GOVERNMENT'S POLICY

The contention that poultry producers will require a State subsidy if they are to increase production in accordance with the Government's policy was advanced by Mr. G. D. Hunter (Waikato) yesterday at the annual conference of the New Zealand Poultry Producers' Federation when sponsoring the following remit: "That the price to the producer of exported eggs be sufficient to compensate poultry-keepers for the high level of production costs as compared with those of their overseas competitors."

"A great deal of legislation at the present time is based on the surmise that the production value of commodities in New Zealand will expand very considerably in the future," he said. "It must be pointed out to the Government that as far as the poultry industry is concerned this must mean a considerable increase in the quantity of eggs exported. They will then come into competition with eggs from America and the Continent, where production costs, are much lower.

"If there is to be an increase in production, some payment will have to be made to the poultry producer. Everyone else is looking after himself and not the welfare of New Zealand as a whole. You have only to go down to the wharves to see that." The remit was adopted.
