A Double Celebration. A double cause for celebration took place recently when Miss Constance Smallwood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Smallwood, Highland Park, announced her engagement at the party given by her parents to celebrate her twenty-first birthday. The sherry party took place at Mr. and Mrs. Small wood's home in Watt Street, and the hostess wore a smart black reception gown. Miss •Smallwood's frock was of deep blue stiffened net. Among those present were Mesdames F. W. Moore, H. Clay, W. F. Graham, G. Crimp. W. F. Jensen, G. Connell, and the Misses Scott, Wilson, Rigg, Fleming, Edie, Parr, Moore, Grant, Hoby, Vickery, Preshaw, and Jocelyn Smallwood. Bride-elect Entertains. A kitchen party was held recently at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Petherick, Hataitai when some fifty guests brought a variety of gifts for the kitchen of Miss Nancy Hope, whose marriage to Mr. S. Ayling will take place next month Mrs. Petherick's pleasant reception-room was decorated with huge bowls of coloured chrysanthemums. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. J. The members of the V.M.C.A. ladies' auxiliary spent a pleasant afternoon when they met in ..the association rooms yesterday. A: large . and wellstocked stall was under ihe. charge of Mesdames Vernon and Henley, and their helpers in Group 6, and business was so brisk that a very satisfactory sum was raised. Mr. R. S. Maunder presided, and arrangements were made for various activities during trie coming months. Miss Joy Sutherland, accompanied by Mrs. 1 London, sang two solos. During the j past month a picnic was held at Wilton's Bush, and a musical afternoon took place at the home of Mrs. A. J. Stanaway, Wadestown, when a substantial sum was raised for the funds of Group 3. Mrs. L. M. Schrader was recently bade farewell and wished bon voyage on her departure for a six I months' stay in Australia;

Queen Mary's Portrait. A ceremony of interest to many women will be performed next Tuesday at the National Art Gallery and Museum, when her Excellency, Viscountess Galway, will formally present to the Board of Trustees the portrait painting of her Majesty Queen Mary, which was painted by commission of the women of New' Zealand. As the addresses of a large number of the subscribers to the fund are not known to the Board of Trustees, it has not been possible to send out invitations to every subscriber, but, as indicated in an advertisement in this issue, all subscribers are invited to attend the ceremony. Cricket Season Closes. An enjoyable evening was held recently to mark the close of the cricket season by the Todd Motor Industries, Ltd., Cricket Club, which entertained the Trafalgar Park Cricket Club at the Randwick dining-rooms. Over 60 people were present. Dancing and games were popular items on the programme, and tap-dancing by the Misses Audrey and Valeric Abbott was much appreciated. Songs by Messrs. J. K. Ferguson and D. Love and two clever impersonations by Mr. L. Watson were also roundly applauded. Dance music was supplied by Messrs. D. Love and H. W. Hartley. The party was brought to a close by the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." A Floral Demonstration. An instructive address, on the preservation and arrangement of many varieties of flowers was given by Miss Blundel, who has recently returned from London, where she had studied floral decorative work, at a meeting of the Gardening Circle of the Townswomen's Guild, where they met recently in the social room of the Blind Institute. Dixon Street. Among the many hints given was one, that if beech leaves were put into about one inch of glycerine until the glycerine was absorbed the leaves would keep all winter. Miss Blundel also demonstrated with- flowers the effective grouping and arrangement of mixed colours. Owing to the absence of Mrs. Arlow. Mrs. Knox Gilmer presided. She also gave members some helpful hints on the growing of flowers. After thanks: to Miss Blundel had been expressed,! afternoon tea was served by Mes-j dames Frethy, Kinsman, and Sol. 1

Audience Entertained.

A splendid three-act comedy, read I recently to an appreciative audience by members of the Wellington Amateur Operatic Society in the studio, Manners Street, was the main item in an enjoyable social evening. Vocal items were also given by Mrs. K. Ainsley and Mr. Norrie Denton Those who took part in the reading were Misses Lillian Sanderson, Grace Walpole, Joyce Jellicoe. Winnifred Male, and Messrs. Ivan Smith, Pat Keough, . and I Graham Dowling The evening, which I was arranged by Miss Grace Walpole, concluded with supper. Help for Otaki Health Camp. A meeting of the Otaki Health Camp ladies' auxiliary was held recently, the president, Mrs. A. J. Burnett, being in the chair. Mesdames E. Ransom Myers, A. Barr-Brown, J. S. Land, Alan Lawson, M. S. Bentley, W. Little, and Clarence Meachen (honorary secretary) were also present. The president was nominated as the auxiliary's representative to the Wellington District Health Camp executive. It was decided to hold a musical afternoon at the St. John Ambulance Hall early in May. The auxiliary since its inception has helped the Otaki Health Camp in many ways, mainly in the form of clothing, furnishings, etc., its latest effort being to provide curtains .for the recently-completed staff quarI ters. The Health Camp caters for over 600 children annually from all parts of the southern portion of the North Island, and the auxiliary serves a necessary adjunct to the association's work on behalf of sick children. The secretary. Mrs. Clarence Meachen, reported the results of her meetings with women connected with the Health Camp movement at Christchurch, Timaru, Oamaru, and Invercargill, and their willingness to assist by arranging talks on child welfare during the course of the Centennial Exhibition. Mrs. Meachen was privileged to see the plans of the new permanent health camp which is to be erected at Roxburgh, in Southland. Christening Party. Mr. and Mrs. Eric Underwood gave a party recently at their home in Lyall Bay to celebrate the christening ■ of their son, Trevor Houghton. Among the guests were Mesdames L. M. Un- ; derwood, E. H. Final ! arrangements are complete, and given fine weather, patrons should enjoy a pleasant afternoon. The function will be officially opened by Lady Myers at 2.30. The Port Nicholson Silver Band, under Conductor J. J. Drew, with the Caledonian Pipe Band, will be in attendance, and Highland dancers should be an added attraction. Afternoon tea will be dispensed by members of the Voluntary Aid Detachment. The proceeds of the function are being devoted to the furtherance of the activities of the Wellington Red Cross which has a long record of service in. the community and today stands ready to meet any emergency. Afternoon of Bridge. A successful bridge afternoon was held on Wednesday in the Brooklyn Returned Soldiers' Club Rooms, Cleveland Street. The party was well attended. After tea, a- prize was awarded to Mrs. Dyer. Among those present were Mesdames Wright, Newton, Alan Wright, Rafter, Raddon. McDonald, Orr, Manson, Anderson, Elias, Jameson, Burgess, Robinson, Dyer, Morris, and Metcalfe. Party for American Guest. Mr. and Mrs. Leyland-Smith, Kelburn, entertained a number of friends last evening at a cocktail party in honour of their American visitors, Mr. and Mrs. J. Ashwell, who are making a tour of New Zealand and Australia. A number of guests attended after the Government House garden party. Amorig those present were Commander and Mrs. Howe, Mrs. K.
