According to a Lisbon message, the Burgos radio station announced at 2.20 p.m. local time that the war in Spain had ended. Berlin reports that a German news agency dispatch from Burgos states that the whole of Spain is now in General Franco's hands and that all the provincial capitals have declared for the nationalists. General Franco's troops are pushing on from Madrid and elsewhere, meeting with no resistance. Appeals are being broadcast from Catalonia exhorting the population to remain calm.
The Valencia radio station announced that Falangists occupied Valencia at 1 p.m. Many people frantically prepared to leave during the night. Fighting is reported to have taken place in the streets of Cartagena.
The nationalists have taken Jaen, Guadalajara, Cuenca, and Cuidad Real, and freed prisoners. There was practically no bloodshed.
A wireless message from Alicante announces that the nationalists have occupied the town. Nationalist planes bombed the British port of Gandia. Heavy damage was done, but there were no casualties.
A message from Valencia states that Fascist cars suddenly appeared in the streets, and crowds in the main square waved nationalist flags. Lisbon reports that the Almeria radio station announced that the city had fallen.
A Berlin message states that the news agency at Madrid reports that President Besteiro and Colonel Prada have been arrested.
