BANK OFFICERS

GUILD SECRETARY TO

RETIRE

Mr. H. P. Mourant, who has been general secretary of the New Zealand Bank Officers' Guild since its formation in July, 1919, will retire at the end of this month. He intends to leave Wellington next month with Mrs. Mourant and family on a visit to Jersey, his ancestral home, for Mourant is a good Jersey name.

Mr. Mourant's association with the Bank Officers' Guild had convinced him, he said recently, that "it is possible to serve two masters, and to serve them well—the staffs and the banks. The guild has never supported that damnable doctrine that the interests of the employer and employee are opposed. It would be better for New Zealand, and for all other countries, if there were a closer association between employer and employees, so that both could work for the common good." According to the guild's official organ this principle of co-operation had been notably successful in so far as relations with the banks and their employees were concerned. Mr. Mourant's practical knowledge of banking extended over a period of 22 years' service with the Bank of New South Wales. His interests other than that of thj guild include active work in the' Taranaki Street Methodist Church, and he is a well-known figure on the Wellington Bowling Club's green.

Mr. C. A. R. Brunt will succeed Mr. Mourant as secretary of the Bank Officers' Guild.
