ASSOCIATION VISITS

OVERSEAS TEAMS

FOUR POSSIBILITIES

The increasing public interest in the game of Association football which became apparent after the visit of the English amateur team a couple of seasons ago should be well maintained in the next three seasons if tours by overseas teams are what is wanted to stimulate attendances.

Teams- representing the famous Islington Corinthians, South Africa, Hungary, and India are all possible visitors to New Zealand, according to the annual report of the New Zealand Football Association.

"During the season," says the report, "a letter was received from the Islington Corinthian Football Club, affiliated with the London Football Association, stating it to be the intention of the club to tour the Southern Hemisphere in 1940 and desired to include New Zealand in their itinerary. The council referred the matter to Brigadier-General W. R. N. Madocks, the representative on the Football Association, and he has replied that after a conference with officials of the club the question is now one of a guarantee, the amount required being £3000 from the Australian and New Zealand Associations. No correspondence on the matter has been received from Australia, and it will be necessary for the incoming council to discuss whether the suggested guarantee can be arranged.

"The Australian Soccer Football Association has advised that a South African team will tour Australia in 1940, and that the team will probably visit New Zealand. A Hungarian international team is expected to tour Australia during the forthcoming season, and it may be possible for this team to play a series of games in New Zealand. In addition to the above, the Indian Football Federation has expressed its willingness to send a representative team to New Zealand. It will therefore be necessary for the incoming council to endeavour, in conjunction with Australia, to draw up an itinerary covering the years 1939 to 1941."
