AGE BENEFITS
MEN OVER 60 YEARS
A DIFFICULTY OVERCOME
The Prime Minister (the Rt.. Hon. M. J. Savage) announced today that to overcome the difficulty of the men aged 60 years who, qualifying for age benefit, will have no income between April 1 and April 23, it has been decided to provide work until April 14 for those men who have no other income for that period. This procedure means that the age benefit for the month of April will be payable on April 23; the week following that in which their income from work will finish. .
The social security age benefit payable at 60 years was introduced, said the Prime Minister, to provide maintenance instead of relief work for all who desired to retire, or were unable to obtain ordinary work. "These men if "qualified for age benefit will not qualify for work under employment promotion schemes, but. this will not debar them in any way from accepting ordinary employment instead of the age benefit or of supplementing their age benefit ■by the amount of allowable income," added Mr. Savage. "The Government will also instruct its placement officers to assist all those who desire work in obtaining employment."
