COMMANDER'S RECORD

The commander ,of the Dominion Monarch is Captain .W. H. Hartman, one of the best-known and most popular officers, not only in New Zealand but among those in other countries, associated with New Zealand trade.

At different times he has been master of the Pakeha, Tainui, Tamaroa, Akaroa, and Mataroa.

During the war, from February, 1915, to March,. 1918,, Captain Hartman served as lieutenant and navigating officer in H.M.S. Whitby Abbey, later commanding H.M. yacht Catania. During the Gallipoli landing, in April, 1915, he was frequently under fire, and at subsequent dates, when his ship was on special duty in the Dardanelles, he took part in the embarkation of wounded from the beach to Morto Bay in ship's boats under fire. He also saw service on the Bulgarian and Turkish coasts.

After bringing the'Akaroa to New Zealand on her maiden voyage in 1933 Captain Hartman was appointed marine superintendent of the Shaw, Savill Company at Wellington, a position he relinquished at his own request to take command of the Mataroa.

Cordery; assistant purser, Mr. S. Nicholson; chief steward, Mr. A. E. Demeza.
