Transfer of Nurses. At a recent meeting of the Wellington Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance members stood for two minutes as a mark of respect to their late divisional surgeon, Dr. A. E. A. Palmer, who resigned at the end of 1937 owing to ill health and whose death occurred a short time ago. A letter was received from Nursing Officer M. H. Wilson applying for a transfer to the Napier Nursing Division, and was received with regret, and it was decided that a letter of appreciation of her services to both cadet and senior divisions was to be forwarded. Ambulance Sister E. M. Win is being transferred to the division from Nelson Nursing Division. Application is to be made for the. transfer of Cadet Molly Aylett to the senior division. Arrangements were made for duty at Wellington Public Hospital during the remainder of the weekends in March, and triangular bandaging completed the evening's work. "Tour Through Europe." A reminder was given by Mrs. L. O. H. Tripp, acting president of the Victoria League', at yesterday's morning tea party, of the "tour through Europe," which the league's younger members were conducting"1 in ■ the Masonic Hall on Thursday night, March 16. The "tour" will be illustrated by national songs and dances and should provide an interesting programme. On Their Way To India. Passengers for Bombay by the Strathnaver include Mr. V. A. Arnold, who is going to India on a business tour, accompanied by Mrs. Arnold (nee Joan Tully, Wellington), states "The Post's" London correspondent. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold will be away for some time and they are joining the boat at Marseilles. Pre-Wedding Party. The home of Mrs. Connell at Mount Street was the scene of gaiety recently when Miss Kathleen Connell and Miss Nan Howe gave a "kitchen evening" en honour of Miss Ethel Jones,- whose wedding to Mr. C. E. Hollis will take place tomorrow. Miss Jones, who received many useful gifts for her cream and cherry kitchen, was wearing a smart frock of tigei'-gold crepe. Those present included Mesdames Connell, Griffiths, Maddon, Beveridge, Harris, and Misses Armstrong, Thurston, Woodcock, Adamson, Findlater, Elsie Jones, Hogg, I Nash, Slee, Taylor, and Pat Dennehy.'

Willing Members. The Oriental. Bay-Roseneath branch of the Residential Nursery is fortunate in its members. In the annual report special mention was made of the kind work of Mesdames A. Southwick, A. Murdoch, J. Spence, J. A. Foster, A. Cowles, Duncan, M. Hewitt, Israel, Davidson, Parkinson, R. R. Scott, H. Stringer, Hughan, Crockford, Miss E. Denton, and Mr. Turner. New Zealand Pianist in London. At the Royal College of Music, on February 17, a fine performance of the Schumann Concerto for Pianoforte and Orchestra (in A Minor, Op. 54) was given by the College "First Orchestra," conducted by Dr. Malcolm Sargent, with Miss Edith Astall, A.R.C.M. (Wairoa), playing the solo part, states "The Post's" London correspondent. Miss Astall's sound technique is reinforced by gifts of imaginative sympathy in interpretation, which should be invaluable ~#o her in a musical career. Her rendering of this strenuous work of the great romantic composer was vivid and interesting throughout—sweetness of tone combining with well-balanced phrasing and rhythmic fluency, to please both the ear and the mind. Although Miss Astall's playing is not, ,as yet, remarkable for tonal depth or power, it is so vital and appealing that it achieves a real distinction of its own-, apart from comparisions of tone-values or other considerations. Miss Astall is holder of an Associated Board Scholarship. t I Praise for Voluntary Workers. Appreciation of the splendid work i of the local president was expressed I at the annual meeting of the Oriental Bay-Roseneath branch of the Women's National Reserve Residential Nursery, which was held recently at the home of Mrs. Burton, Oriental Bay. Walshe, the president, on her wonderful efforts on the nursery's behalf, and also paid tribute to the work of the secretary, Mrs. A. Longmore, and Mrs. Burton (acting secretary). The annual report was presented, after which the chairwoman told of Christmas parties which were given at the nursery for the staff and children. Mrs. Walshe was re-elected president in the election of officers. Mrs. Lewis was elected vice-president, Mrs. Longmore honorary secretary, Mrs. Stringer treasurer, and Mesdames Bowater, Turner, Parkinson, Lonergan, Marsden, and Foster were appointed to the committee.
