BEAUPARTIR'S GOOD TRIAL

( Special from "Hurry On.") NEW PLYMOUTH, March 13. Smoke Screen registered a good Thompson Handicap trial when he won the Taranaki Stakes on Saturday. The state of the going was in his favour, but despite the fast pace set by Oratory and Olympus : he was at no stage far away from them and challenged Oratory almost as soon as the straight was reached. He looked as though the race would improve him; he should be capable of a bold bid for victory at Trentham on Friday. Russian Ballet, who runs in the same interests as Smoke Screen, accounted for the Flying Handicap on the opening day in attractive fashion, fairly burying her opponents over the last furlong. As she is partial to soft tracks her prospects in the Urenui Handicap on Saturday again appeared bright, but Te Huia beat her pointless. Nevertheless with her light Weight in the Railway Handicap at Trentham she is not without prospects, as Te Huia, who is the most improved horse in Taranaki at present, was receiving 201b from her. A PROMISING JUVENILE. The two-year-old Fils de Vaals, who is engaged in the Pacific Handicap on Friday, an impressive performance when he won the Paritutu Juvenile on Saturday. It was not a very classy field he beat,, but three furlongs from home he.appeared to have an impossible task. However, he responded as only a. good colt could to Win in the last stride. The extra furlong and the long Trentham six furlongs track Should suit him, and if the going happens to have the sting out he must be respected, even though the class is much stronger. All going well he may contest the. North Island Challenge Stakes on Saturday. After Cheval de Volee's splendid win in the Taranaki Cup on the first day he was sent out a good favourite for the Paul Memorial On Sattirday, especiallly when it was seen that, his rider, K. James, could claim a 71b allowance, Cheval de Volee's ownertrainer, ,A^ Rowan, however, was far from confident, owing to the state of the track. He mentioned before the race that though Cheval.de Volee was good in really heavy going he would not strike out on a slippery surface. This proved correct, as, despite all the efforts of his rider, Cheval de Volee was all at sea in the gbing and was never going like a winner. Under the circumstances little notice should be taken of his failure, as he is in great order at present. So far no decision has been made as to whether he will race at Trentham. - TE HUIA'S IMPROVEMENT. The Hawera trainer R. Brough has worked a big improvement in Te Huia. When Mr. J. Kiley purchased Te Huia in January at "a price in the vicinity Of £500 most were of the opinion that the seller had received the better of the deal, but, as in his last five starts Te Huia hag WOh four races and £510 in stakes, as Well as a £25' trophy, he is now a cheap horse. Afte? a rather lean period Brough is enjoying a great run of success at present. He won three races at Wanganui and four at New Plymouth last week. He is one of the most popular trainers in Taranaki and his successes on Saturday brought him many congratulations. Though beaten by Cheval de Volee in the Taranaki Cup Beaupartir registered a good St. Leger trial. He looked a winner when he challenged Cheval de Volee in the straight, but it is possible that the lack of a race since New Year's Day handicapped him in the gruelling finish that ensued. It is doubtful if Cheval de Volee has ever been better than he is at present, ana Beaupartir, Who was meeting him on 101b worse than weight-for-age terms, was far from being disgraced. "He^is likely to start a hot favourite in the Trentham classic. \ Peerless was a disappointment, bne enioyed a splendid fun on the rails throughout but failed to come on over the last furlong and a _ half. Her failure was surprising after her good race at Bulls, as she had done well and worked well since arriving at New Plymouth. She is a wonderfully-con-tented filly and looked bright and well when she paraded. It is possible that her lapse of form is only temporary, but she will now recede in favour for The-Beau Pere—Drama filly Millament, on the strength of a great gallop on Wednesday morning, came in lor a fair amount of support in the Juvenile Handicap on the first day, and, though she ran a little greenly, she finished fast in third place. She is a promising filly who should make her presence felt at Trentham and Awapuni.
