WOOL SALES

LONDON SERIES

MARKET PROSPECTS

Kesults of the opening of the March series of wool sales in London, taking place today, should be available tomorrow. All indications so far received point to, a maintenance of, if not a slight improvement on the closing rates of the January series which finished February 3. Since then nine sales have been held in New Zealand. Although prices realised at those sales have not been princely and growers have accepted them, low as they were, yet the market cannot be said to have materially weakened! But until the results of the first day the London March sales are to hand it cannot be known if the latest unfavourable turn in Central European affairs —the Slovak unrest —will . have had any bearing on the market. For comparison with the opening rates of today's London sales, the closing rates of the January-February series as furnished by the Bank of New Zealand may be of interest. They are as follows: — Per lb. . d. d.

Yorkshire has been a consistent and prominent buyer in the Australian and New Zealand sales, and Russia recently re-entered the English market. France was also an important buyer in Australia and New Zealand, and Germany was more active in them than usual of late. A total catalogue of 116,500 bales will be submitted to the London sales, beginning today; of this 55,800 will be of New Zealand wools. Predictions for the London sales today were for an advance of 5 per cent, on closing rates for the January-Feb- ' ruary series for fine crossbreds, and parity with last sale for medium and ! coarse crossbreds. i
