INTERESTS OF SAFETY
MOTOR-CYCLISTS DISCUSSED
Following discussion by the bylaws committee of the Petone Borough Council on the subject of motor-cyclists and road safety, the committee decided not to comment as to restrictions, but to welcome any restriction that the Transport Department imposed. "Consideration was given, to the letter from the Commissioner of Transport asking for this -council's views as to whether or not it is in the interest of road safety to impose restrictions on the use of motor-cycles," reported Councillor A. M. Macfarlane at last night's meeting of the council. "The matter was given careful consideration, and the committee was of the opinion that it was out. of this council's province! to suggest restrictions. The following resolution was passed:—"That this committee views with alarm the increasing toll of life taken by motor-cycles, but does not feel justified in passing any comment as to restrictions that should be imposed. Any restrictions that the Transport Department feels justified in imposing would, however, be welcomed." Councillor J.. Huggan suggested an open season on motor-cyclists in Jackson Street after 2 a.m. "They thoroughly deserve shooting," he said. "Jacfcson Street and Petone as a whole are -made noisy by motor-cyclists in thfj early ' hours of the morning. It was decided to.-.adopt-the committee's motion.
