NEWS OF THE DAY

Ash Wednesday. Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the Lenten forty jiays' fast prior to Easter Sunday which is on April 9 this year. Today is known as Shrove Tuesday, a day on which pancakes figure in the menu, a custom' dating a long way back. Centennial Memorial. The centre of the Square at Palmerston North has been approved by the Palmerston North City Council as the location of an electric fountain as a Centennial memorial, states "The Post's" representative. The site is at present occupied by the Soldiers' War Memorial, and the R.S.A. is to be asked to approve the shifting of • the statue to another site nearby. .'. ..-■.>-' ■ . '' ■■ Parliament Prorogued. * ; It is not likely that Parliament will assemble until about the- usual time in June. A Gazette notice issued last night. further prorogues the General Assembly until May 25, so that, unless any emergency arises to warrant a session, Parliament will not meet before that date. The previous prorogation authority expires on Thursday next. Hosing in Johnsonville. "It seems that people disregard the fact that they should hold hoses in their hands when watering gardens, and the result is that frequently water is left running continually," commented Mr. G. A. Lawrence, chairman of the Johnsonville Town Board, at a meeting of the board last evening when the question of water supply was being discussed. A report received from the works foreman suggested that the hosing of all gardens should be prohibited. It was stated that notices had been issued before warning residents against indiscriminate use of hoses. The board decided that public notices should be issued prohibiting residents from hosing their gardens. Weather Vagaries. Unfortunately for I-Jutt Valley residents the Town Clerk of Petone has not yet been appointed clerk of the weather. A full programme of events for the entertainment of the public had been, arranged for presentation on the Petone foreshore last evening in connection with Fitness Week. At 4 p.m., however, a rising wind from the north made it appear that it would be impossible to carry out the programme and a decision was made to postpone the events. At 7 p.m. the wind died down and conditions were entirely favourable but it was then too late, as arrangements for the appearance of the various aquatic clubs and the Salvation Army Band had been cancelled. Those members of the public which the better conditions had brought to the beach were somewhat disappointed, but there was no alternative to the decision that had already been made.
