COOLER TOMORROW

Special forecast for Wellington:— Light to fresh northerly winds, changing to the south tomorrow morning. Weather cloudy to overcast, with rain later. Temperatures cooler tomorrow. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole issued by the Meteorological Office at noon is as follows: — Winds north-easterly to north-wester-ly at first from Nelson and Marlborough northwards, force mainly light to moderate, but strong- at times in exposed positions, elsewhere light to moderate; southerlies prevailing and freshening, and southerlies extending over the Dominion within the next 24 hours. Weather fair at first over most of the North Island, but otherwise rather unsettled, with, scattered rains probable in most districts. Temperatures becoming cooler. An extensive depression is located over the northern and central Tasman Sea, its southern extension lying this morning over the centre of the South Island. An anticyclone of considerable intensity is advancing on to the western Tasman Sea. Yesterday light to moderate northerly winds predominated over the whole country, but by this morning a southerly change had advanced as far as Timaru, and there has been a slight freshening generally of wind force. Except for widespread fog along the east coast of the South Island and some scattered light drizzle in parts of the Taranaki area, yesterday was fair to fine and warm. By this morning the skies had become overcast over most of the South Island and in the far north, and rain was falling in Westland, and was also reported from some scattered places in the south and east of the South Island. Elsewhere the weather remained fair but with increasing cloud in most districts since yesterday. By 9 a.m. today Westport had had rain totalling 37 points, and Greymouth 50 points. Except for a temporary improvement in the evening the weather in Auckland has remained cloudy to overcast. Temperatures have been mild, with a light north-easterly breeze, the maximum yesterday 70.2 degrees and the minimum last night 62.6 degrees.

There was a light, misty drizzle in Christchurch yesterday morning, but about 10 a.m. the sky cleared and the remainder of the day was sunny. This morning it was again overcast, with some scattered light rain. A light easterly wind has prevailed. The maximum temperature yesterday was 71.1 degrees and the minimum 58.1 degrees. The rainfall was 10 points.

Yesterday in Dunedin was hot and sunny. A moderate north-easterly breeze turned to the south during the night, and this morning it was overcast.
