IMPORTANT WORK

AN AUSTRALIAN IN LONDON

An Australian woman, Miss Lilian De Lissa, holds an important position in Englalnd1 in the nursery school movementy, states an exchange. Miss De Lissa ;Jwas associated with the establishment some years ago of the Gipsy Hillf Training School, the first of its kindj in England. She first became interested in the problem of the pre-schobl child in industrial areas when, as a young girl,. she used to teach and pl&y with the children in the Woolloonxoolpb district. Later she became \ associated with the kindergarten movement in South Australia, and shortly before the war she was sent abroad tfo study development in kindergarten work in the United States, Italy, Germany and Great Britain. .'" In Italy she did avgood deal of work with Madame Monfessori, and during her visit to Great, .Britain she made such a good imprespion on the education authorities there that a request was sent to South Auvstralia that she should be permitted to> remain in London. The result waff that, although she returned to Adelafde for a time, she went back eventually to London and played an important part in the development of the nursery school movement there. Durhpg the winter months it is her practice to travel through the country lecturing in such centres as Manchester aU,d Birmingham and interviewing applicants for nursery school training.

Miss De Lissa actually lives in Surrey in the Old Cottage sit Oxshott, which she bought some years ago at an ideal homes exhibition at Olympia. At present she is working on/a book. on the nursery school movement, which will be published probably this year. / / A tablespoon of chopped mint cooked with vegetable soup imparts a delicious flavour to the dish.
