EWE FAIR

PRICES BELOW LAST SEASON

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

HASTINGS, This Day.

The opening of the first ewe fair of the 1939 season was devoid of any surprises at the Waipukurau special sale today, prices being well down on the opening rates of the opening sales of last season. Two-tooths showed depreciation of 8s to 10s per head, and five-year-old ewes showed a drop of 5s to 7s 6d.

The top price of the day was 25s 3d for two-tooths, and 18s 2d for fiveyear ewes. A yarding of over 11,000 came forward and in most cases venders were prepared to meet the market. The quality was mixed, with good two, four, and six-tooths ''predominating. The top prices in two-tooths ranged from 22s 6d to 255; medium 20s to 225; late shorn and small from 17s 6d; four-tooths made 21s to 245; four- and five-year ewes realised 18s 6d to 20s 2d for best. Others ranged from 14s to 17s 7d, and small types from 12s.

The best price that could be obtained for six-year lines was 14s, with medium ranging from 10s Id, and poorlymouthed sorts down to 9s.
