MR. JOHN MADDEN

Mr. John Madden, Chief Postmaster J at Wellington, has been chosen by the Government to act as New Zealand delegate at the eleventh Universal Postal Congress which will open at Buenos Aires on April 1 next. In announcing the selection of Mr. Madden for this position, the Postmaster-General (the Hon. F. Jones) said that the Universal Postal Congress was held every five years and the delegates agreed upon the international postal law that was to have effect during the succeeding five years. The last two congresses were held at London and Cairo respectively. Mr. Madden is a member of an old Wellington family. He joined the Post and Telegraph Department as a cadet at Dunedin in 1901, but came to Wellington at the end of that year to a position in the accounts branch of the G.P.O. He remained on the staff of the G.P.O. until 1922, when he was appointed supervisor of the parcels branch of the Wellington Post Office. He was transferred to a similar position at Auckland in 1924-and after filling the position of supervisor of mails He became deputy Chief Postmaster of the Auckland Post Office in 1931. He was appointed Chief Postmaster at Wanganui in 1933 and two years later took charge of the Dunedin Post Office. He was appointed to his present position at Wellington in 1936.
