A SUCCESSFUL RUN

TAKANINI'S ELEVEN RACES

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

TAKANINI, January 9. The remarkable winning run of Takanini-trained horses continued over the Christmas holidays and eleven events were credited to local horses, the winners being Brazilian (3), Round Up, Palustre (2), High Sea, Dutch Girl, Royevrus, Valamito, and Bachelor King. The amount won in stakes over this period amounted to over £5305, the earners being Round Up (£1450), Palustre (£800), Valamito (£700), Royevrus (£700), Bachelor King (£400), Brazilian (£360), High Sea (£290), Inquisitor (£140), Dutch Girl (£125), Anion (£100), Penzance N (£7o), Gay Movie (£SO), Orelio (£SO), Lady Fox (£3O), and Full Hand (£3O). / Since the Auckland Christmas Meeting, the two-year-old Esquire has been sent to Takanini and he is now a mem-, ber of E. Pope's stable. He spoiled his chances at Ellerslie by not getting away well in either of his contests, and the opinion that has been formed is that he is a smart galloper of whom' the best ; has .yet to be seen. • Saccone has arrived back from Melbourne, where he unsuccessfully .contested three events, and the Surveyor' gelding is again under :E. Pope's quid-: ance. He was looking a little light in; condition on arrival. ■One of the features of the recentAuckland Meeting was the success of Takanini horses in doubles, and on the three last days of the meeting they annexed both the handicap and the sprint events. The winning combinations were Royevrus-Palustre, Round UpPalustre, and Valamito-Bachelor King. Royevrus's Summer Cup was a mild surprise, but in all other instances the winners were well supported. Anopheles's recovery from -the rick she received has been slow, but the Vaals filly is now on the upgrade and will be fit to resume work any day. It was a pity that she was not available for the classic events, but the brilliance shown by High Caste and Beaulivre leaves a doubt as to whether she would have been equal to the task of defeating them. King's Lancer is doing nicely under J. Cruse, and this gelding, who will not be required to race for some time yet, is a likely sort for autumn and winter hurdle racing. i Tepoto showed an abundance of pace! on the last day of the Auckland Meet- j ing, and confirmed the opinion that she is not far removed from the best class of sprinter. Down a grade at the Thames Meeting, the Tea Tray filly should take considerable beating on the small turning track, as she is a brilliant beginner. Maxam, who has had an easy time of late, has resumed work, but it is difficult to judge whether she is still sore, as she has a very scratchy action when moving along. She has been: npminated for the Thames Meeting, however, and her connections are seriously considering undertaking the trip.
