MAIDSTONE PARK

APPLICATION FOR LOAN

PURCHASE BY BOROUGH

A decision to apply to , the Local Government Loans Board for permission to raise a £6000 loan by special order for the purchase of Maidstone Park was made by the Upper Hutt Borough Council at a special meeting last night. No objections to the proposal were received. The term sought for the loan is 30 years, for which period the owner, Mr. P. Davis, has agreed to accept debentures at 3j per cent, per annum. "I hope that the grandchildren of the present residents will bless the council for the step.it has taken," said the Mayor (Mr. p. Robertson) in replying to a toast at a social gathering following the meeting. "It is perhaps a little out of the ordinary, but we are all sure that the end justifies the means. The Government has taken

steps which .'Will bring Upper., Hutt within 35 minutes of Wellington in a very shor^t time. The Rimutaka tunnel will be completed in five years, and coincidental with this will be the linking of the Waterloo railway with Silverstream by means of a double track and an electrified service, "In a decade or so the population will be perhaps 15,000. At the present time, there are only two industries in Upper Hutt, and with the exception of the people employed in these the population is a floating one largely dependent on Wellington. It was these considerations that prompted the council in its action."
